Josef Schuster (Austrian, 1812 - 1890)

When he was a child, Joseph (Josef) Schuster moved with his family to Vienna, where he attended the first two classes of grammar school. His talent was discovered by chance by the academy professor Joseph Mößmer and promoted by the imperial field marshal Prince Liechtenstein, for whom Schuster's father worked as a confectioner. This enabled him to visit the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, where Joseph Mößmer, Sebastian Wegmayer and Franz Xaver Petter were his teachers. After a spa stay in Bad Gastein, Schuster discovered the world of alpine flowers as an artistic theme at the suggestion of Archduke Johann. He achieved great success with aristocratic and upper-class audiences, and his flower pictures were sold all over the world.

Joseph Schuster created numerous flower pictures and still life, which were very popular in his time.
